City of Berwyn City Council met May 27

Here are the minutes provided by the council:

Mayor Robert J. Lovero called the City Council meeting to order at 8:02PM. Clerk Garcia called the roll. Alderpeople present in chambers: Caldwell, Bowman, Leja, Fejt, Pabon, Polashek, Bruckmann and Carmichael. Attendees rose to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Mayor Lovero asked for a moment of silence in support of our First Responders, the passing of Gregory James Las Colas and the birth announcement of Leinali Tapia.

Open Forum: Mayor Lovero opened the floor for public comment.

l. Jose Ramirez informed the community about Bungalo+, pride month and June events. 06/04 Film Screening at Public Library, 06/21 Pride Ride Car Parade, 06/24/25 Friends of Public Library will host Bungalo+ 30th Anniversary, 06/28 Pride Walk.

2. Janel King invited the community to (non-profit) Awake's Night of Music Fundraiser on 06/06/25 at Joe Vallez Center.

3. Introductions of Communication ambassadors (Nomar and Xavier) and their excitement of their roles.

4. Division Chief Scott Waszak informed the community on C.E.R.T Program Info. & registration. C.E.R.T trains residents to respond effectively and safely during emergencies.

5. Aid. Polashek recognized the service of Vets. and Memorial Day.

6. Aid. Leja hosting a Retire Flag Ceremony on 05/31/25 at 9:00am at O'Briens Cleaners.

7. Aid. Pabon thanking everyone for coming to Youth Opportunity Fair and Housing Forward

Approval of Minutes:

C-1: Aid. Leja made the motion, seconded by Aid. Fejt, to amend item H-1 to a 6 Yea +-1 NAY vote (Leja) on the May 13, 2025 Regular City Council Minutes, first meeting. The motion passed by a unanimous voice vote. Aid. Fejt made a motion, seconded by Aid. Pabon to approve the minutes of the first meeting as amended. The motion passed by a unanimous voice vote.

C-2: Aid. Fejt made the motion, seconded by Aid. Pabon to approve the regular City Council minutes 05/13/25, second meeting. The motion passed by a unanimous voice vote.

Report from staff:

Aid. Leja made a motion, seconded by Aid. Carmichael, to bring forward agenda item J-5. The motion passed by a unanimous voice vote. JS is a communication from Fire Chief Coniglio 

Welcoming and swearing in of Xavier Rendon. Clerk Garcia administered the Oath of Office to probationary firefighter paramedic Xavier Rendon.

Bid Openings: Nothing submitted.

Berwyn Township, Berwyn Health District, Berwyn Development Corporation: Nothing submitted.

Reports from the Mayor: 

F-1: Aid. Fejt made a motion, seconded by Aid. Leja, to approve the following Ordinance deferred from 05/13/25 agenda, Ordinance of Chapter 228.02 Composition of the Finance

Dept., Chapter 228.05 Contracts and Purchases, and Chapter 228.11 City Comptroller of the Codified Ordinances of Berwyn for the City of Berwyn, County of Cook, State of IL. On the call of the role, the motion passed unanimously.

F-2: Aid. Fejt made a motion, seconded by Aid. Polashek, to adopt the proclamation recognizing the month of June as Motorcycle Awareness month in the City of Berwyn and thank ABATE for their 38 years of service in motorcycle safety. The motion passed by a unanimous voice vote.

F-3: Aid. Polashek made a motion, seconded by Aid . Pabon to adopt the resolution approving North Berwyn Park District Corrida del Mariachi SK Run on 08/16/2025. The motion passed by a unanimous voice vote.

Motion by Aid. Polashek, seconded by Aid. Carmichael to move item J4 forward. The motion passed by a unanimous voice vote.

J-4: Aid. Polashek made the motion, seconded by Aid. Pabon to accept Chief Cimgalia's North Berwyn Park District Corrida del Mariachi SK Run and all associated events as informational.

The motion passed by a unanimous voice vote.

Zoning Board of Appeals: Nothng submitted.

Reports from Aldermen, Committees and Boards:

1-1: Aid. Leja made the motion, seconded by Aid. Bowman to adopt the Proclamation recognizing the contributions of crossing guards and proclaiming the month of May 2025 as Crossing Guard Appreciation month in the City of Berwyn. The motion passed by a unanimous voice vote.

Reports from Staff:

J-1: Aid . Fejt made the motion, seconded by Aid. Pabon, to authorize the settlement of 23WC0019753 in the amount of $100,000.00. On the call of the roll, the motion passed unanimously.

J-2: Aid. Leja made the motion, seconded by Aid. Caldwell, to accept the communication from Police Chief Cimaglia regarding the St. Leonard's end of school year celebration on 06/06/25 as informational. The motion passed by a unanimous voice vote .

J-3: Aid. Leja made the motion, seconded by Aid. Bowman, to accept the communication by Police Chief Cimaglia of the Corpus Christi religious procession parade on 06/22/25 from St. Leonard in Berwyn to St. Pius in Stickney as informational. The motion passed by a unanimous voice vote.

J-6: Aid. Pabon made the motion, seconded by Aid. Fejt, to accept Finance Dir. Martin declaring a 2015 Chevy Tahoe from the Police Dept. as surplus inventory. The motion passed by a unanimous voice vote.

J-7: Aid. Bruckmann made the motion, seconded by Aid. Pabon to approve the Independence Day Celebration Fireworks on 07 /03/25 at Morton West H.S. The motion passed by a unanimous voice vote. 

J-8: Aid. Leja made the motion, seconded by Aid. Polashek to accept the Communication from Dir. Ayala regarding Berwyn Fire Dept. (C.E.R.T) program as informational. The motion passed by a unanimous voice vote.

Consent Agenda Items K-1 thru K-5: Aid. Fejt made the motion, seconded by Aid. Leja, to approve the Consent Agenda as presented. The motion passed by a unanimous voice vote.

Aldermanic Committee Meetings:

1. Aid. Pabon 5th Ward Meeting on 6/14/25 at 11:00am to 1pm at Las Cuecas.

Adjournment: There being no further business before the Council, Aid. Carmichael made the motion, seconded by Aid. Bruckmann, to adjourn the meeting. The motion carried by a unanimous voice vote. The meeting adjourned at 8:35 p.m.
