On May 29th, the Town of Cicero's Health Department held its annual Women's Wellness Fair at the Cicero Community Center. The event aimed to promote preventive care, education, and accessible health resources for women in the community. Supported by Town President Larry Dominick and the Board of Trustees, the fair attracted hundreds of residents.
Dr. Katherine Skurski, Medical Director of the Cicero Health Department, stated: "This event is about empowering women through access—access to preventative care, education, and local health resources." She highlighted that women often prioritize family well-being over their own health needs. The fair focused on topics such as breast cancer awareness and cardiovascular risks.
The event provided free health screenings like blood pressure checks and cholesterol testing. Marissa Buscemi, Director of Clinical Services, noted that vendors offered educational materials and wellness demonstrations tailored for women. "These events make health care approachable," said Buscemi.
Services extended to women of all ages. Vanessa Parrish, Director of Operations for the Health Department, acknowledged months of planning behind the scenes. New partners included a domestic violence support organization offering private sessions.
Town Collector Fran Reitz mentioned mental health support elements like pet collars available for sale. "Animals can be so helpful for mental wellness," she said.
Town Clerk Maria Punzo-Arias emphasized self-care: "As women, we often neglect ourselves while caring for others."
Trustee Blanca Vargas stressed free health services' importance: “Providing free health services like those offered today is so important.”
Trustee Victor Garcia praised community participation: “Mental health and information shared with our community today—specifically for women—is what makes this fair so meaningful.”
