Nearly 30 years after the murder of two U.S. Marines in Cicero, an arrest has been made. On Thursday, the Cicero Police Department announced the arrest and extradition of Daniel Flores, aged 49, who was residing in Guanajuato, Mexico. Flores faces charges of two counts of first-degree murder regarding the deaths of John Fields, aged 22, and Michael Fields, aged 19. The brothers were shot multiple times on April 12, 1995, in Cicero while John had just completed his service and Michael was on furlough from Japan.
Cicero Police Superintendent Thomas Boyle stated, "Today, we are announcing the arrest of Daniel Flores for the murders of John and Michael Fields. Our thoughts remain with the Fields family, who lost two brave men who served our country with honor."
The investigation was reopened in 2013, and a witness identified Flores as a suspect in 2014. Although an arrest warrant was issued in 2016, Flores was not captured until February 8, 2023, in Celaya, Mexico. He was extradited to the U.S. on April 9, 2025, and charges were filed by the Cook County State’s Attorney's Office the next day. Flores was detained and is scheduled to appear in court in Maywood on May 2.
U.S. Marshal LaDon Reynolds acknowledged the team effort that led to Flores’s arrest, saying, "The capture and extradition of Daniel Flores is the result of tireless work by multiple agencies. We hope this development helps the Fields family find some peace."
Sister Angela Fields and other relatives of the victims attended the announcement but did not speak to the press. They were described as visibly emotional and declined to comment.
Deputy Superintendent of Investigations Francisco Diaz discussed the difficulty in locating the key witness, who had been in a relationship with Flores but was found through social media and detective work. "We had a hard time locating our key witness—she had been in a relationship with Flores and left the country," explained Diaz.
Lead detective Sergeant David Leuzzi reflected on the effort put into the investigation since he took it over in 2013. "We met with the family early on and promised we would pursue every lead. This was a mission. We never gave up."
With the case in legal proceedings, law enforcement remains committed to justice for the Fields brothers, as Diaz remarked, "John and Michael Fields were two young men who served their country. They didn’t have to die the way they did. Today is about justice for them and their family."
