The Illinois Lottery has announced its continued collaboration with the Illinois Council on Problem Gambling (ICPG) to support March as Problem Gambling Awareness Month. This annual nationwide initiative aims to raise awareness about problem gambling prevention, treatment, and recovery services.
Harold Mays, Director of the Illinois Lottery, emphasized their commitment to responsible gambling practices. "At the Illinois Lottery, we are committed to encouraging responsible play every day," he stated. "While most people gamble for entertainment, we understand that it can become a challenge for some. This month, we are focused on increasing awareness of the potential warning signs of problem gambling and ensuring people know where to turn for help."
This year's campaign is themed "Help and hope are here: Call 1-800-GAMBLER" and aims to increase empathy, break down barriers to treatment, and support individuals and families affected by gambling-related issues.
Dave Wohl, Executive Director of ICPG, highlighted the significance of this month for raising awareness. "An estimated two million adults in the U.S. meet the criteria for severe problem gambling," he said. "This month is a crucial time for stakeholders across the gaming industry to unite and reinforce the message that help is available. Through education, outreach, and support, we strive to empower individuals to make informed choices about their gambling behaviors and seek assistance when needed."
Throughout March, the Illinois Lottery will engage in various activities across the state including radio spots, billboards, digital media campaigns, social media engagement, and direct outreach efforts targeting players and lottery retailers. These initiatives serve as reminders that while lottery games are designed for entertainment purposes and support public education along with other causes in Illinois, they should always be played responsibly.
For those experiencing issues with gambling or know someone who does, help is available through a free confidential helpline at 1-800-GAMBLER. The service operates 24/7 providing information, counseling options, and support connections. Additionally, assistance can be accessed via live chat at AreYouReallyWinning.org or by texting "GAMB" to 833234.
The Illinois Lottery takes pride in being one of only nine U.S. lotteries certified at Level 4 by the World Lottery Association under its responsible gaming framework—a testament to its dedication towards promoting safe gaming practices.
Since its founding in 1974, the Illinois Lottery has contributed over $25 billion towards K-12 public education through the State’s Common School Fund since 1985—the primary beneficiary receiving nearly 99% of proceeds from lottery sales.
