Earlier this month, the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System (ILEAS) informed Brookfield Police Chief Michael Kuruvilla that the department would receive two ballistic shields. The shields, a United Shields III+ and a United Shield MXV with light kits, are part of ILEAS' Officer Safety Program.
These shields are constructed from ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene and offer protection against handgun and rifle rounds. Currently, Brookfield has two ballistic shields, but neither is rated for rifles. In previous incidents involving armed individuals, the department had to borrow a shield from neighboring communities.
"I want to extend my sincere gratitude to ILEAS for providing us with two ballistic shields that will significantly enhance the safety of our officers,” said Kuruvilla. “These shields will be crucial in protecting our personnel when responding to incidents involving armed individuals, particularly those with rifles. This partnership helps ensure that we are better equipped to serve and protect our community, and we are thankful for ILEAS' continued support."
The shields are being granted at no cost to Brookfield; otherwise, they would have cost approximately $8,000. Chief Kuruvilla also expressed his appreciation for Lt. Rafael Alvarado's efforts in writing the grant application on behalf of the department.
