The Town of Cicero hosted a Veterans Day celebration on November 11, 2024, at the Cicero Community Center. The event was organized by the Cicero Department of Special Events and its Director Patti Salerno.

Local leaders, educators, students, and veterans gathered to honor those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The ceremony emphasized gratitude, unity, and educating future generations.

Salerno began the program with a welcome introduction for Dr. Anthony Grazzini, who served as the master of ceremonies. Dr. Grazzini thanked veterans and local officials present, including Trustee Victor Garcia and Town Clerk Maria Punzo-Arias.

Dr. Grazzini highlighted the importance of honoring veterans as a community and introduced distinguished guests while recognizing local leaders' efforts to support service members.

Town Chaplain Ismael Vargas led a prayer: “Today, we remember the sacrifices made to protect our freedoms.” He also acknowledged active service members and prayed for their safety.

Army veteran Victor Sarmiento shared his experiences from South Korea and Operation Iraqi Freedom. “Service doesn’t end when we take off the uniform,” Sarmiento stated, encouraging volunteerism.

Navy SEAL veteran Tony Ward spoke to younger attendees about Veterans Day's history dating back to World War I's armistice on November 11, 1918. “This day is not just about reflection but also action,” he said.

Miss Alyssa Anselmini from Morton East High School expressed pride in her students’ participation: “We are thrilled to be here today.”

Students Sophia, Oswaldo, and Zoe delivered speeches honoring each military branch. Zoe noted veterans' sacrifices for future freedoms: “Their courage inspires leadership, service, and unity.”

Ms. Diaz from Unity Junior High introduced her students Ashly, Daniel, and Janitzia who discussed Veterans Day history and shared personal stories of military service within their families.

Dr. Grazzini remarked on the event’s significance: “Programs like these are vital,” teaching youth about sacrifice while uniting the community.

As the ceremony concluded, veterans mingled with students sharing stories reflecting on freedom owed to bravery and sacrifice.

The event honored military service while celebrating Cicero’s spirit of unity through speeches, shared histories, reaffirming commitment to remembering past sacrifices for future generations’ principles of service and leadership.
