The Cicero Fire Department Open House on Sunday, September 1, 2024, began with favorable weather and an atmosphere of community engagement and education. Hosted by Fire Chief Jeff Penzkofer, the event provided residents an opportunity to meet and interact with local first responders in a relaxed setting. Chief Penzkofer expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, “We get to showcase what we do in a more social setting. Instead of meeting the community at emergency calls, they can come to our house, and we can show them a little hospitality.”
The open house featured various departments including Cicero Consolidated Dispatch (CCD), the health department, and the police department. “It’s like a social meet and greet,” Chief Penzkofer added. “We’ll be cutting up a car with the jaws of life so people can see what we do without the pressure of a real emergency. We’ll also have a simulated fire burn to show how fire behaves in rooms with sprinklers versus those without.”
The grand finale was a dramatic side-by-side fire burn demonstration where attendees observed the life-saving impact of fire sprinklers. In addition to educational demonstrations, there were activities for families. President Larry Dominick’s special events parade pumper was popular among children who enjoyed rides around the area. The event also included a foam pit, a fire hydrant spraying water, and interactive fire safety lessons.
Meghan Ardolino from Cicero Consolidated Dispatch emphasized educating residents about their role in emergencies: “We talk to kids about when to call us and if they know their address. It’s crucial because on your worst day, you might need to give us a call.”
Cicero Police Officer Adrian Enriquez highlighted building relationships with the community: “It’s good to show kids that we’re their friends. It’s important to get to know the people we serve.”
Town Trustee Blanca Vargas thanked both President Larry Dominick and the Cicero Fire Department for organizing the event: “It’s a wonderful opportunity to provide fire prevention education to our community. Learning how to prevent fires at home can save lives.”
Deputy Fire Chief Greg Fithian led a smoke detector giveaway program during which free fire and carbon monoxide detectors with 10-year batteries were distributed to Cicero residents: “We want everyone to be protected in their homes,” he explained.
Throughout the day, attendees enjoyed snacks such as churros, popcorn, water, Gatorade, and soda creating an enjoyable atmosphere for all ages. The Cicero Fire Department Open House successfully brought together community members while promoting safety awareness.
