During the July 9, 2024 board meeting, LULAC of Cicero informed the Town of Cicero board that 50 scholarships will be given to District 201 students.

“We are very pleased to be here today because we have good news for you. It is to assist our students, our youth of District 201,” said Town Trustee Blanca Vargas, who is also the President of LULAC of Cicero. “I would like to thank the Cicero board of trustees and our President Larry Dominick for your great support.”

Vargas organized the presentation of the scholarships to take place after the board meeting.

“The 50 scholarships are to outstanding youth from District 201 who are sons and daughters of hardworking parents in our community,” said Gabby Rodriguez from LULAC of Cicero.

The generosity of many people and businesses made the scholarships possible. To name a few, Judge David Cerda, Joe Rodriguez, Labor Personnel, Comcast Maria Castro, Golden Corral, La Chiquita Food Market, Cermak Fresh Market, Hacienda las Calaveras and Hollywood Marketing Company.

A total of $25,000 were awarded outside council chambers with a second ceremony planned at Morton East High School Auditorium on Monday July 15th, 2024 at 6 p.m.

“As a first-generation Hispanic student pursuing engineering physics, this scholarship means a lot. I get to pay off a lot of my textbooks and tuition,” said Efren Anguiano who will be attending the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign next semester as a junior. “To have that sort of weight being lifted off my shoulders is definitely a really big support. It’ll allow me to focus more on my academics.”

Anguiano will be transferring to U of I from the College of DuPage on behalf of the Engineering Pathways program.

Another scholarship recipient was Elizabeth Garcia Chavez who wants to be a cardiologist. “I’m very excited. I’m very grateful for it. I think it’s gonna be a great opportunity to help me grow as a person and individual in college,” said Garcia Chavez. “I’m going to the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign to study biology on a pre-med track. I’m a first-generation student so I think this is a great opportunity to make my parents really proud and just like help me with my academics.”

Happy 30th Anniversary to LULAC of Cicero! Thank you for supporting our youth in reaching their dreams.
