The Village of Brookfield commenced construction on two public infrastructure projects this week: the 2024 Water Main Improvements and the standalone 2024 Lead Water Service Line Replacement Project.
The 2024 Water Main Improvements Project involves replacing approximately 6,000 feet of water main, installing copper water services, restoring disturbed areas, and related work. The project is divided across seven locations within the Village. A map detailing these locations is available online.
Construction notices have been distributed to properties on Brookfield Avenue and Henrietta Avenue, where work has begun. Similar notices will be sent to other affected areas before construction starts. Residents can track the project's progress by subscribing to the Village newsletter or visiting the project's GIS map.
Phase I of the three-phase 2024 Lead Water Service Line Replacement Project also began this week. Over several years, Brookfield plans to replace all lead water service lines connecting public water mains to private property meters. Approximately one-third of Brookfield's 6,800 water service lines are made of lead; around 2,200 lines will be replaced under this initiative.
Funded by a water rate increase passed in 2022, the Village covers the full cost of each replacement. In 2024 alone, about 700 lead service lines will be replaced at an estimated cost of $7.5 million.
Brookfield aims to coordinate these replacements with Street Improvement Projects and Water Main Improvement Projects as part of a long-term plan developed by Village staff and engineers. Although extensive in scope, contractors will focus on select streets or blocks at a time rather than working throughout the entire town simultaneously. A map showing specific replacement locations for 2024 is available online.
Work began this week at Morton Avenue (Garfield – 31st), Madison Avenue (Washington – Grand), and Fairview Avenue (Maple – Sunnyside). Residents can monitor project updates via the Village newsletter or by visiting the Lead Service Line Replacement Project GIS map.
