The Cook County Department of Veterans Affairs (CCVA) is currently accepting applications for the Chicago Cook Technology Academy (Tech Academy), a training program aimed at providing veterans with essential career skills in the technology industry. The county has partnered with Microsoft and National Able Network to offer this free 11-week course, which will commence on July 22, 2024. Applications are due by midnight on Sunday, July 14, 2024.
Veterans residing in Chicago or suburban Cook County are encouraged to apply for the Tech Academy, which plans to host five sessions throughout 2024. This application period pertains to the fourth training session. Since its launch in October 2022, three sessions have been completed, resulting in 32 graduates, with 24 securing employment post-training. The average starting wage for these positions is $30.27 per hour.
The Tech Academy's curriculum is based on Microsoft's Software and Systems Academy and has been extended into Cook County by Microsoft at no cost. This marks the second region in the nation to offer such programming. While available to all qualifying veterans, it is specifically tailored for service members transitioning out of military service.
Participants will receive training in cloud development or cloud administration from expert instructors at National Able Network’s IT Career Lab. Graduates of the course will have opportunities to interview for entry-level IT positions within CCVA’s network of IT hiring partners.
Cook County has allocated $750,000 from American Rescue Plan Act funding for this program.
