Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias presented a $27,500 technology grant to the Cicero Public Library on June 6, 2024. This allocation is part of a broader initiative in which over 100 libraries across Illinois will receive a total of $2 million in new grant funding aimed at enhancing technological capabilities.

“It’s a pleasure to join you all at this incredible library today,” said Secretary of State Giannoulias. “We are here today to announce the allocation of $2 million in new grant funding for technology for libraries in Illinois. We must do more to help our most vulnerable and least resourced libraries across Illinois.”

The event marked the first time that the Secretary of State's office has provided grants specifically to libraries. Giannoulias reflected on his decision: “I had the honor of serving on the board of the Chicago Public Libraries under Mayor Emanuel, and as we traveled the city and state, you would see libraries that were inspirational and beautiful... Then you go right down the street, and you have libraries without air conditioning and lights falling off. That has always stuck with me.”

Maria Punzo-Arias, Town Clerk of Cicero, expressed gratitude for the support: “As a resident of Cicero and also the Town Clerk, we are grateful to Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias for the grant that is being awarded to the Cicero Library to enhance technology services.”

Cicero Library Board President Ismael Vargas emphasized that the grant arrived at an opportune moment given recent renovations. “Technology will enhance these rooms that we have just made,” he noted.

Sandra Tomschin, Director of Cicero Public Library, shared her excitement about utilizing the funds: “We just finished the construction of our maker-space. So now we’re gonna be purchasing a 3D printer, a glow forge machine, a circuit machine, a sewing machine, [and] an embroidery machine so we can start giving classes.”

The press conference highlighted both community leaders' support and plans for future improvements at Cicero Public Library.
