Schools were locked down Tuesday after a student was stabbed at Proviso West High School.
The school's Principal, Elizabeth Martinez, addressed the incident in a message to the school community, assuring parents that swift action was taken by the administration, local law enforcement and emergency medical teams.
“We want to inform you of a recent incident that took place today on our school grounds, involving an altercation between two students that led to a minor injury,” Martinez said in a message to the school community.
“Swift action was taken by the school administration, local law enforcement and emergency medical teams, who arrived promptly at the scene. The student was taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.”
“In response to the incident, classes were placed on a soft lockdown. We want to assure you that our school community is safe and secure. Our top priority is the safety and well-being of our students and staff.”
“We will continue to work to ensure a secure and supportive environment for everyone in our school community.
Sub X News reported that a video circulating among students depicted the aftermath of the stabbing, showing a significant amount of blood. According to Sub X, the victim suffered a non-life-threatening injury to the arm and was released from the hospital.
“One student was stabbed, and suffered a non-life threatening injury to the arm. The student was taken to the hospital,” Sub X reported.
The suspected student assailant was apprehended by authorities Tuesday afternoon after fleeing the school on foot, with their abandoned car found on school premises.
Police towed the alleged aggressor’s vehicle from the parking lot to the station.
The victim was discharged from the hospital, while authorities conducted interviews with a witness on Tuesday afternoon.
“The victim was released from the hospital and police were interviewing a witness on Tuesday afternoon,” Sub X reported.
The stabbing led to lockdowns at both Proviso West High School and Hillside Elementary School.
According to NBC 5, the incident involved two teens with a history of not getting along.
The Hillside Police Department also addressed the issue in a press release.
“On 11/14/2023, shortly after 10:00 AM, the Hillside Police Department received a report of a juvenile stabbed at Proviso West High School, 4701 Harrison St Hillside, IL,” the Hillside Police Department said on Facebook.
“Police Officers and Fire Department personnel responded to the school. Upon arrival, a male juvenile was transported to the ER with a stab wound. The sole offender fled from the school. Proviso West and Hillside School were both placed on lockdown status. Both the victim and offender are Proviso West High School students.”
“The investigation so far has revealed that this is an isolated incident involving two juveniles who know each other and may have had other issues in the past. No other students were involved in the altercation, which took place in a stairwell on the first floor. The victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries to both arms and was treated and released from a local area hospital.”
“The offender fled from the school and was last seen on camera heading south from the school campus towards Fencl Ln/Roosevelt Rd. The offender was located at approximately 1:30 PM and taken into custody by Hillside Police Detectives.”
“The juvenile offender is in custody at the Hillside Police Department pending charges.”
