On July 6, U.S. Rep. Jesus Garcia (D-Chicago) tweeted that he wrote a letter to Gov. Pritzker asking for financial help after the severe weather that occurred in Cook County on July 2. Garcia also suggested that Pritzker declare an immediate declaration of emergency, and requested long-term infrastructure investments.
"On Monday, I sent a letter in support of requests from Cook County and municipalities across IL-04 for assistance to recover from the severe weather and flooding over the weekend," Garcia tweeted. "I also support an immediate state of emergency declaration and long-term infrastructure investments."
"I echo the concerns of residents and local elected officials to swiftly address this crisis and provide much needed support," Garcia said in his letter to the governor. "On July 2nd flash floods and aggressive rain caused widespread damage to home streets and vehicles. This incident impacted countless homeowners, renters, small businesses, and transit agencies across Southwest Chicago and the southwest suburbs in Cook County. This weather caused people to lose their homes and belongings as water overwhelmed residential streets, major roads and highways. The areas impacted are largely working class with little to no support to economically recover without external assistance."
On July 2, Cook County got hit with some of the heaviest rain that has ever been recorded. It is estimated that up to nine inches of rain fell in some parts of the area, which ended up causing many roadways to flood, as well as many residents' basements.
Pritzker responded by issuing a disaster proclamation for Cook County, as well as several other counties that were affected by the weather. Pritzker stated, "we'll continue to closely work with these communities to support them with every resource on the road to recovery."
Garcia responded by thanking the governor for listening to the community's call for help. According to Garcia, "issuing this needed disaster proclamation will put us on a faster road to recovery."
