The Lyons Township board of education votes on the sale of property owned by the district.

“The potential this sale could have for our students is tremendous,” Board President Kari Dillion said during the meeting. “Proceeds from this transaction could greatly enhance and improve the learning spaces at both our aging campuses. As outlined in our district strategic plan, LT has a goal to allocate the resources necessary to maximize success for all our students, and tonight we are taking steps toward achieving that goal.”

The board uploaded a livestream of its public meeting to the district’s YouTube channel.

A resident came out to speak in public comment against the sale of the Willow Springs property. The resident asked the board to instead consider a lease agreement with the purchaser to ensure a revenue stream for the district or at least divide the parcel and continuing holding on to a part of it for the future of the district.

The board also discussed its tax levy. The board noted it had a total of $76.7 thousand in property taxes in 2021.

The district has been considering the sale of their owned land at Willow Springs, totaling about 70 acres of land. They created a webpage back in November when they announced the possible sale to get info and opinions from residents and community members about the transaction. They reviewed these inputs at an earlier board meeting. They also did multiple projects of enrollment over the next fifteen years, and even the high estimate was below 4500 students.

The board will meet again at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 23 at Lyons Township North Campus on 100 South Brainard Avenue.

The sale of the land was set for a minimum of $55 million dollars and the contract included a contingency that allowed the purchaser to explore development and coding requirements with the village of Willow Springs. The board will post the notice of the sale for three continuous weeks and then will collect all the bids, considering a winning bid in January. The vote did pass with at least ⅔ of the board in favor of selling the land.
