Triton College’s Phi Theta Kappa Hosting Alex’s Lemonade Stand

Triton College’s Chi Zeta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) will be selling lemonade for Alex’s Lemonade Stand at the Triton College Fall Family Fun Fest on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., in Triton’s Botanical Gardens. The goal is to raise $400 that will go towards childhood cancer research.

The Chi Zeta Chapter, a 50-year-old chapter of PTK, began fundraising for Alex’s Lemonade Stand at the Triton Fall Family Fun Fest in 2017, noted Johnny Urbina, director of Student Services.

“The Fall Family Fun Fest is a wonderful outdoor community event and a great place to enjoy a refreshing cup of lemonade that benefits a good cause,” Urbina said.

For the 2022-2023 school year, the Chi Zeta Chapter chose to raise money for childhood cancer research as a part of their Honors In Action project. This project combines academic research and action-oriented service to address real-world challenges in communities.

“Selling lemonade for Alex’s Lemonade Stand allows students to experience civic responsibility, community engagement and empathy,” Urbina said.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand began with Alexandra “Alex” Scott, who was diagnosed with childhood cancer just before her first birthday, according to http://alexslemonadestand.org/. At the age of 4, Alex started a lemonade stand to raise money to find a cure for childhood cancer.

In 2004, Alex passed away at the age of 8. A year later, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) was founded by her parents to continue Alex’s efforts to raise money for childhood cancer.

According to cancer.org, “about 10,470 children in the United States under the age of 15 will be diagnosed with cancer in 2022. Childhood cancer rates have been rising slightly for the past few decades.”

In connection with Triton’s PTK’s mission to raise money for childhood cancer, the organization and the Triton College Student Association (TCSA) will be supporting Make-A-Wish Illinois. Their 2022 goal is to raise $4,000 at their annual Walk-For-Wishes event on Sunday, Oct. 16, in Lincoln Park.
