Berwyn North School District 98 Board of Education met May 26.

CALL TO ORDER
Meeting began at 6:35 p.m. with the pledge of allegiance led by Board President Mounce.
COMMUNICATIONS
A. Retiree Staff Recognition:
Dr. Michelle Smith recognized Christine Crook, Barbara Hammerand, Gina Vernola, and Georgine Mullen for their years of service. Also, a heavenly greeting and farewell to Ms. Georgine Mullen who would have retired this year.
B. Dual Language Presentation – Mrs. Francela Lopez
Mrs. Francela Lopez, Director for Language Learners, provided an extensive presentation on the EL and DUAL programs to the Board and community. Mrs. Lopez explained each program in detail including enrollment data, teacher professional development, newcomer to the country student protocols, Access Assessment trends, social cultural trends, curriculum and community engagement.
C. Student Presentation – “Ideas to Reduce Food Waste”
Havlicek 5thgrade students Xitzel Arteaga and Leilani Martinez presented to the Board and community the importance of reducing food waste in schools. Xitzel & Leilani provided the Board and community with five ways to reduce food waste. For each idea they provided pros, cons, and suggestions. They providing pricing, location, and ideas on the upkeep for their plan.
D. Lincoln Middle School Girls’ Soccer Championship Acknowledgement
Dr. Smith acknowledged the Lincoln Middle School Girls’ Soccer Team for defeating the undefeated Unity Jr. High School team and winning the Championship.
PUBLIC COMMENT
A. Ms. Tracy Rachuy, a former teacher of the district expressed her reasons for leaving the district and is concern for the rate of teachers leaving Berwyn North School District 98. Ms. Rachuy also voiced her concern with the Thinking Core curriculum and the current disciplinary issues.
B. Ms. Marta Rodriguez wanted to express a “very sincere thank you to Mr. Kearns at Jefferson” for the Walk for Cancer event which was a great success. She also expressed her gratitude to the ELF Team, Principle Thill, and Assistant Principal Murguia for the wonder family night event at Jefferson elementary. Ms. Rodriguez expressed her gratitude to Dr. Smith for her sincere and humbling attempt at speaking Spanish at the 8thgrade ceremony. She also wanted to offer her services of providing Spanish lessons for all those who would like to the lessons.
BOARD COMMENTS
A. Member Brown wanted to congratulate the 8thgrade class. Mr. Brown was unable to attend the ceremony due to a medical emergency.
B. Member Kulis-Kearns Valeriano would like to direct the Superintendent to assign a staff member to follow up on the student ideas that have been presented to the Board.

PUBLIC COMMENT
A. Monica Deenihan, NBEA President and Donna Miller NBEA Vice President thanked the Board and Superintendent as the Chief negotiators on behalf of the entire collective for the successful contract negotiations. They also wished the Board a restful and healthy summer.

A. Member Kulis-Kearns Valeriano invited other board members to join her at the next ISAB West Cook Division Meeting taking place on June 22nd.
