This is the first in a series of DUStars.com publications that will highlight the successes of recent Dominican University alumni. Garrett Boston, a native of Layton, Utah, made a significant impact in his three seasons with the Stars' men's soccer program, playing in and starting 51 matches. What drew you to Dominican University when you decided to transfer here?
The biggest thing that drew myself to Dominican was the program's success in the NACC and consistently making the NCAA national tournament. Another reason was even though the program is a division 3 program, you would mistake it for a division 1 school as the expectations within the program were extremely high which is one major reason for coming to DU. Academically the classroom sizes seemed to be generally smaller compared to bigger schools therefore, I knew I would experience more hands-on learning.
What are some of your fondest memories during your time as a Dominican soccer player?
I can generally think of four special moments as a DU soccer player. First was beating St. Norbert in the 2021 NACC conference tournament final in PKs and celebrating on their home field. Another memory was beating Aurora 2-1 in the spring 2021 (COVID season) in OT at Aurora. Another was playing in the NCAA national tournament in both 2019 and 2021. Lastly was the brotherhood at DU is nothing I'll experience anywhere else. I still communicate with the coaching staff and the players till this day which is really special.
How do you think the student-athlete experience, both generally and specifically at Dominican, has helped prepare you for your future?
It has helped me in several areas. Firstly, it has helped me handle adversity as nothing in life will ever go to plan therefore, handling this adversity is extremely manageable now. Another area was maturity as being far away from home helped myself mature quicker and become an adult faster. These items helped myself be better prepared for the future and any occupation.
Talk about what you are doing now and how the comprehensive Dominican experience prepared you for that.
I am now working in a medical genetic laboratory specializing in oncology research and also coaching a 2007 youth team as well as a high school team. Dominican helped me accomplish all these things as academically my professors prepared me for any occupation and, athletically, learned important life lessons to become an adult quicker.
