Triton College Athletics issued the following announcement on Jan. 25
The Triton College wrestling team got a postseason preview at the Harper Open Jan. 22 in Palatine. The NJCAA No. 12 ranked Trojans competed against many of the schools they will see February at the district tournament.
Triton placed five wrestlers led by Elon Rodriguez (Marian Central Catholic) winning the title at 133. Rodriquez, currently ranked second in the nation in his weight class, went a perfect 4-0. The freshman topped Sam Smith of Rochester Community College by major decision (13-5) in the championship match.
Drake Campbell (Brownsburg) took home runner-up at 149. Campbell lost in sudden victory to Jalin Connor of Bryant and Stratton College in the championship match, but en route to the final picked a win over a wrestler from NCAA Division I Northern Illinois University.
Luke Barron (Oswego) went 3-2 on the day to place sixth at 157. Alonzo Smiley (Glenbard North) won four straight matches after losing his opening round to place fifth at 165. Ronald Krewer (St. Patrick) went 3-1 and finished fifth at 285.
"This was an important weekend for our team as we were able to compete against many of our Great Lakes District rivals," Triton head coach Tim Duggan said. "We saw a lot of good wrestling from our guys and a lot we can improve on before the national tournament. Our goal is to be national champions and All-Americans, so we need to get back to work in the practice room."
Next up, the Trojans will travel to Dearborn, Mich. on Feb. 5 for their last tune-up before the district tournament, as Triton will participate in the Whizzer Open at Henry Ford Community College.
