Q1 Recap: 51 parolees from Cook County convicted of homicide set for release

There were 51 offenders convicted of homicide living in Cook County released on parole during the first quarter of 2021, according to Illinois Department of Corrections data obtained by the West Cook News.

The data shows 48 men and three women were among the parolees. Of the parolees sentenced for homicide, three were veterans, and the median age was 45. The youngest parolee was a 22-year-old man sentenced in 2018, and the oldest was a 77-year-old man sentenced in 1974.

The offender who had been incarcerated the longest was Joseph R. Hurst. He was convicted in 1974 when he was 30 years old. He is now 77.

Under state law, paroled offenders are still in legal custody of the IDOC, meaning they can be taken back to a correctional center at any time if the state has probable cause or a warrant.

The following table shows how many offenders convicted of homicide were paroled during the first quarter of 2021 in each Illinois county.
