Oak Park and River Forest High School District 200 Board of Education President Sarah Spivy wants fewer parent comments during meetings-- even virtual ones.

Spivy announced Wednesday in a memo that she will now limit public comment to 20 minutes per topic and require public commenters to pre-register with the board with text of their proposed comments, two hours ahead of the meeting.

Spivy also said she will no longer be accepting emailed comments to be read into the record.

Spivy's policy takes effect immediately, she says, including for tonight's "Committee of the Whole" board meeting, where the board will discuss a proposal to ban honors classes for high school freshmen.

Parents who wish to comment at the meeting must fill out a Google Form.

"Once the 20-minute limit per agenda item is reached, no further comments on the topic will be permitted. If you would like to ensure that the Board receives your comments regardless of whether there is time for you to read them, you may include the text of your comments below," it says.

Oak Park and River Forest High School (OPRF) has resumed in-person learning. But OPRF District 200 board meetings are still closed to the public. Community members are allowed to attend via Zoom.

The official vote on the OPRF honors ban, proposed by the OPRF administration, is expected to take place at the regular District 200 board meeting on Oct. 28.

Spivy, 46, who works for Cook County Government, was first elected to the District 200 board in 2015 and rose to board president in 2020. She has a law degree from Duke University and is also a graduate of University of Chicago.

Spivy's husband, Preston Jones, Jr., is a Cook County Circuit Court Judge.
