Lyons Township High School (LTHS) canceled its homecoming dance hours before it was scheduled to begin on Saturday after police found guns at the south campus where the dance was to be held.

An email sent by the school district to LTHS families said that the Western Springs Police Department received a report at approximately 4:15 p.m. Saturday of a physical altercation following the LTHS-Proviso West football game along with another report of a weapon at the south campus.

"The Western Springs Police Department conducted a search and located an unoccupied, parked vehicle in the South Campus parking lot, which contained what appeared to be two handguns under the driver and front passenger seats," the email from District 204 Superintendent Dr. Brian Waterman and LTHS Principal Dr. Jennifer Tyrrell said.

"This vehicle has been removed from the scene. The police located two unarmed male suspects who are currently in custody. No injuries were reported. The investigation into this incident is ongoing."

Waterman and Tyrrell said that because the campus was still an active investigation scene and will be for several hours, they were canceling the dance.

"Student and staff safety remain our highest priority, and we will continue to work in collaboration with the Western Springs Police Department to keep our community updated," the email stated.

The "Starry Night"-themed dance was scheduled to be held from 7:30 and 10:30 p.m. outside on the driver's education range.

School officials said it would be rescheduled.
