City of Northlake issued the following announcement on June 30.
As you may remember, the Governor extended the stay at home order until May 30th. Since issuing the order, the governor came up with a plan for reopening the State on a gradual phased in basis.
The plan divided the State into 4 regions with the idea that each region would move toward reopening at its own pace. The Governor set up 5 phases toward full reopening, with specific goals needing to be reached before moving on to the next phase.
Our region, the Northeast Region, is currently in Phase II along with all other regions. The Governor has recently stated that all regions are poised to move on to phase 3 of the re-opening plan.
Phase 3 is somewhat less restrictive than the current Phase 2. Gatherings of less than 10 people will be permitted, and summer youth programs will be able to be held.
However, we will not be able to hold large events and festivals until our region can move into the last and final phase – Phase 5. Phase 5 can not be achieved until there is a vaccine or effective treatment for Covid 19.
It is highly unlikely that this will be accomplished by the weekend of June 27th, the scheduled date for the Carnival, car show and annual fireworks show. Since this is the case, on May 18th, the City Council cancelled these events for 2020. We are looking forward to a bigger and better fireworks display next year. In the meantime, as we move through the various phases toward a complete re-opening, we ask that you follow all of the recommendations of our health officials – wearing face coverings while in public, washing hands frequently, staying at home as much as possible, practicing social distancing when you do need to go out and following the recommendations for sanitizing frequently touched surfaces.
I am working along with other area Mayors to convince the state to allow responsible re-openings of businesses such as beauty and barber shops, restaurants and other retail establishments sooner, rather than later. The safety of the public’s paramount, but the livelihood of our residents and economic recovery is also important.
On another matter, I have been advised that Northlake’s response rate for the 2020 census is approximately 65%. An accurate count is vitally important to our community as this will set funding levels for the next 10 years. If you have not yet completed the census form, please go to My2020census.gov.
On a lighter note – the City will still be raffling off 2 former police vehicles. This year we have 2 Chevy Impalas: a gray/silver 2006 Impala with 77,048 miles and a white 2011 Impala with 42,864 miles. Only 400 tickets will be sold for each vehicle. The cost is $10 per ticket and they are available at City Hall. The drawing will be held on July 13 at 7:00.
