City of Countryside issued the following announcement on May 20.
The National Weather Service reported that the Chicagoland area’s rainfall hit 8.3 inches as of this morning. This breaks the record of rainfall in the month of May and we still have 12 days left in the month. The rains over the last few days have been so significant that the City of Countryside saw flooding in areas that never flooded previously. Public Works employees saw the rain draining within 10 minutes of the rain subsiding. Within about 30 – 40 minutes all storm water had drained into the storm system except one area on 56th Street between La Grange Road and East Avenue. Staff put in an emergency call for sewer jetting services yesterday morning. It was determined that tree roots had blocked the sewer which drains storm water from 56th Street toward East Avenue. Once the roots were cleared, the water properly drained. The City is looking at all areas to determine if any maintenance or improvements are needed.
