Berwyn North School District 98 Board of Education met Feb. 27.
Here is the minutes provided by the board:
CALL TO ORDER: Meeting began at 6:33 p.m. with the pledge of allegiance led by Naomi Perez.
COMMUNICATIONS:
A. Student Ambassador Naomi Perez presented to the Board and community the results of a survey conducted at Lincoln Middle School. The results of the survey indicated that students at the middle school were not satisfied with the current lunch selections and quality of the food. They voiced a desire for a greater variety of selections, giving the example of foods from different countries.
Ms. Perez along with Mr. Bomba, Lincoln Teacher and Student Ambassador Mentor assured the community that this survey will also be conducted at the elementary level in order to compare the students’ lunch satisfaction at all schools.
B. Biggs & Castro Presentation:
Ms. Biggs and Mr. Castro, Consultants, presented to the Board and community what the result of many months’ of interviews, focus groups, professional learning spaces, observations, instructional rounds, surveys, analysis of policy and existing data had taught them. They explained their findings and recommendations to the Board and community. The Board will review all the information.
PUBLIC COMMENT:
A. Francela Lopez, Director of English Learners elaborated to the Board and community upon the work that the Administration along with the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent are conducting in order to work toward a common goal in regards to the Biggs & Castro findings and recommendations. Superintendent Michelle Smith also expanded that the teachers are being provided with Professional Development from Dr. Diana Carry who is a Curriculum and Instruction Coach who is highly solicited nationwide. She has been providing teachers with Saturday PD as her schedule permits on Thinking Core and its unit implementation.
B. Gina Parker, Prairie Oak Teacher and NBEA President introduced herself to the Board and community and announced that she is hosting the Jump Rope Show at Prairie Oak on March 27th at 9:00 a.m. and at 1:50 p.m. and invited everyone to attend.
BOARD COMMENT:
A. Member Kulis-Kearns Valeriano posed the question in regards to Dual Language Program in which Francela Lopez, Director of English Learners, explained that she in collaboration with a committee of teachers are working to develop standard based units that promote the equal amount of rigor as the English units. The committee works with a mentor from Teaching for Biliteracy that provide Professional Development to the members and are assisting in the development of the Dual Language Units. Mrs. Lopez also expressed that it was difficult to meet with committee members and the need to have more meetings in order to complete the units.

BOARD COMMENT:
A. Member Mounce suggested to the Board and community that Columbus Day be renamed to Indigenous Day to follow suit with Berwyn South and Chicago Public School. The reason being Columbus did not discover America when the Indigenous people were already living in America.
Gina Parker, Prairie Oak Teacher suggested that this be integrated into the curriculum at the 4th grade level and come back and revisit the renaming of this day next year.
This matter was Tabled by the Board for further discussion.

A. Superintendent Smith updated the Board on the progress for finding an alternative placement for Expulsion Hearing student.
