Jan.-June 2018 Recap: Parolees in Chicago convicted of homicide

There were 86 offenders convicted of homicide released on parole in Chicago during the first half of 2018, according to Illinois Department of Corrections data obtained by the West Cook News.

The data shows that 80 men and six women were among the parolees. Of the parolees sentenced for homicide, three were veterans, and the median age was 45. The youngest parolee was a 20-year-old man sentenced in 2017, and the oldest was a 73-year-old man sentenced in 1972.

The offender who was incarcerated the longest was Charles Smith. He was convicted of homicide in 1972 when he was 25 years old. He is now 73.

Under state law, paroled offenders are still in legal custody of the IDOC, meaning they can be taken back to a correctional center at any time if the state has probable cause or a warrant.

The table below shows the 50 cities in Illinois with the most paroled offenders during the first half of 2018 who were convicted of homicide.
