A bill that would amend the University of Illinois Trustees Act in determining official residency status for all student trustees has been moved to the House Rules Committee for further consideration.
Sponsored by state Rep. Elizabeth Hernandez (D-Cicero), House Bill 1558 would require the student to prove Illinois residency for the prior six months through the presentation of such formal documents as a valid Illinois driver's license, Illinois identification card or evidence of a valid Illinois voter registration card.
Now in her 12th year in Springfield, Hernandez also serves as the Chairperson of the Consumer Protection Committee on Appropriations-Elementary & Secondary Education; Appropriations-Human Services; Health Care Licenses; Higher Education; and Special Issues Subcommittee.
If passed, HB 1558 will officially go into effect on Jan. 1, 2020. A first reading of the bill was held on Feb. 1.
