Statewide test results: with individualized education plans students score 4.9 points lower at Daniel Burnham Elementary School

At Daniel Burnham Elementary School, a 4.9-point achievement gap persisted between with individualized education plans and without individualized education plans students in 2017, according to end-of-year assessments reported in the latest Illinois schools report card. The achievement gap shows an 9.0-point improvement in scores between with individualized education plans and without individualized education plans students. Of the 1033 students enrolled in 2017, 6.1 percent were with individualized education plans or about 63 students.

The achievement gap measures how one group of students academically outperforms another. The Illinois State Board of Education collects data on the persistent gap between groups by race and ethnicity, income level and gender.

The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, or PARCC, is administered to third- through eighth-graders in Illinois, testing them in reading and math based on Common Core standards. A composite score combines the results of the subject tests.

According to Daniel Burnham Elementary School composite scores for 2017, 9.4 percent of with individualized education plans students passed the tests. Meanwhile, 14.3 percent of without individualized education plans students passed.

Students who passed either met or exceeded expectations and are considered prepared for the next grade level, college or work. Students who failed either partially met, approached or did not meet expectations.

The achievement gap is smaller for English language arts scores and larger for math scores.

There is a 9.5-point gap between with individualized education plans and without individualized education plans students English language arts scores in 2017 a 7.1 point improvement since 2016. In 2017, 7.7 percent of with individualized education plans students passed the reading subject test. Meanwhile, 17.2 percent of without individualized education plans students passed.

There was a 1.3-point gap between with individualized education plans and without individualized education plans student math scores in 2017: 10.2 percent of with individualized education plans students passed while 11.5 percent of without individualized education plans students passed.
