Elmwood Park Community Unit School District 401 students suspended, expelled 306 times in a single school year

Elmwood Park Community Unit School District 401 reported two expulsions and 304 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 306 students during the year. That equates to 11 percent of the 2,783 students enrolled.

Students were expelled for one incident with drugs and one incident with unspecified reasons.

Of the 210 in-school suspensions, 166 were given to boys and 44 were given to girls, including 18 elementary or middle schoolers and 192 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 203 incidents. There were five incidents of violence without physical injury. For 201 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 94 out-of-school suspensions, 71 were given to boys and 23 were given to girls, including 29 elementary or middle schoolers and 65 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 63 incidents. There were 14 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 38 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
