Melrose Park FD responds to 57 fires in 2016

Melrose Park Fire Department responded to 520 calls in 2016, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System obtained by the West Cook News.

The calls in Melrose Park included 57 fires - 30 structure fires, 11 vehicle fires and 11 other fires. The fire department also responded to five calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $1,007,150 in fire loss - or about $17,669 per fire.

The department also received 463 false calls, including 29 malicious calls and 434 other false calls.

The Melrose Park Fire, which has 64 active employees and 70 retired or inactive employees, was $3,991,162 in debt as of December 2015, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $70,020 for every fire in 2016.
