Leyden FPD responds to 74 fires in 2016

Leyden Fire Protection District responded to 270 calls in 2016, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System obtained by the West Cook News.

The calls in Leyden included 74 fires - 47 structure fires, six vehicle fires and 16 other fires. The fire department also responded to five calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $566,330 in fire loss - or about $7,653 per fire.

The department also received 196 false calls, including two malicious calls and 194 other false calls.

The calls resulted in three civilian fire-related injuries.

The Leyden FPD Firefighters' Pension Fund, which has 13 active employees and 13 retired or inactive employees, was $921,323 in debt as of December 2015, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $12,450 for every fire in 2016.
