Chicago school funding by the numbers

Money5

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) are asking for a 25 percent increase in funding from Springfield, or nearly $4,000 more per student.

We analyzed 290 Chicago metro school districts to put CPS school funding in perspective. Do Chicago schools deserve more money?

Chicago (Today)

Spending Per-Pupil: $15,120

Taxpayer Subsidy: $7,666

Local Spending Share: 49 percent

Chicago (Proposed)

Spending Per-Pupil: $18,900

Taxpayer Subsidy: $11,446

Local Spending Share: 39 percent

Chicago Metro Avg.

Spending Per-Pupil: $13,450

Taxpayer Subsidy: $2,976

Local Spending Share: 76 percent

At $18,900 per student, Chicago’s per pupil spending would rank 24th out of 290 Chicago metro districts, just below Lake Bluff District 65 in Lake County ($19,270).

Lake Bluff property taxpayers paid for $18,017 of theirs; Chicago will pay for $7,454.
