Maywood officials released a reminder late last week on the process for approving a proposed noise wall along I-290.
The wall was proposed last fall by the Illinois Department of Transportation, which has since held informational meetings with residents and has begun facilitating a voting process to gauge support for the project.
In accordance with federal highway regulations, property owners living roughly within 300 feet of any proposed noise wall have the right to vote for or against the wall. To be valid, the vote requires participation from at least one third of the property owners who meet that criterion, and over 50 percent of those voters must be in favor of the wall for it to proceed.
Property owners who share a property line with the highway will have two votes. Property owners with rental units will get one vote per rental unit. Renters and affected property owners who do not share a property line with the highway will get one vote.
