Mobile emissions testing and vehicle inspection events will return to Western Springs in 2026. The Illinois Air Team, Senator Suzy Glowiak Hilton, Representative Marti Deuter, and the Village of Western Springs are organizing several events at the Western Springs Recreation Center, located at 1500 Walker Street.
The scheduled dates for these mobile emissions testing events are March 23–27, May 27–29, July 27–31, September 28–October 2, and November 23–25. Each event will run daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. No appointments are required; however, vehicles must meet eligibility requirements for testing.
According to organizers: “Mobile Testing Units (MTUs) are now available to Illinois motorists in the Chicago area. MTUs are specially equipped emissions testing vans that are deployed to select locations around Chicago to provide additional vehicle emissions testing options for the convenience of motorists.” More information about MTUs and a schedule of all current and future locations can be found on the Illinois Air Team website at https://www.ilairteam.net/mobile-testing-units.
To participate in an emissions test, motorists need either a test notice or a registration renewal notice indicating that an emissions test is required. Vehicle owners can check their eligibility using the Vehicle Eligibility Check Tool by entering their VIN or license plate number at https://www.ilairteam.net/vehicle-eligibility-check-tool.
Illinois motorists also have the option to renew their registration tags at an MTU after passing an emissions test. Organizers state: “No SOS renewal notice is needed. Acceptable forms of payment include Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express. No cash is accepted. Service fees apply.”
Western Springs operates under a council-manager government system that separates policy-making from administration and delivers public services through professional staff who support advisory boards (official website). The village manager supervises personnel and implements policies set by elected officials such as the village president and board of trustees (official website). Resident volunteers serve on boards and commissions to address community issues and provide recommendations (official website).
