Medicaid is a public insurance initiative managed by states and financed jointly by the federal and state governments. The program provides coverage to low-income people and families, senior citizens, children, and those with disabilities, making it a key part of the national health care system.

Since Medicaid draws on taxpayer funding, fluctuations in local billing levels indicate how public health dollars are distributed in each community.

The “Medicine Services and Procedures” group includes services cataloged for Medicaid billing based on care provided, sorted via standardized HCPCS and CPT code groupings. Each billing code is allocated to a single service area according to established code prefixes and number ranges, which allows similar services to be viewed as a group. This prevents double counting while ensuring accurate reporting and ranking across years.

Spending on Medicaid increased in various service groups, but Medicine Services and Procedures was the leading category in La Grange in 2024 based on total payments.

Statewide, Medicine Services and Procedures ranked fifth in Illinois for Medicaid payments by category in 2024.

Between 2019 and 2024, La Grange Medicaid payments for Medicine Services and Procedures grew by $105,118, up 65.3%. Some years saw especially strong growth, with pronounced year-over-year increases in 2022 and 2023.

Most Medicine Services and Procedures spending was attributed to specific ZIP codes in the city. In 2024, the largest amount was billed in ZIP code 60525, totaling $266,104. That ZIP code accounted for 100% of all Medicaid payments in this category in La Grange that year.

Payments were also primarily concentrated among a small number of individual billing codes in the Medicine Services and Procedures service area.

Looking at growth, Medicine Services and Procedures Medicaid payments in La Grange climbed 33.7% from 2023 to 2024. This compared with a 28.8% overall increase among all Medicaid claim categories in the city for the same time frame.

According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, federal and state Medicaid spending collectively reached approximately $871.7 billion in fiscal year 2023. This made up about 18% of the nation’s total health expenditures, a sharp rise from around $613.5 billion in 2019, prior to the COVID-19 outbreak.

This growth reflects a roughly 40% increase over several years, driven mainly by expanding enrollment and higher service use during and following the pandemic.

Recent federal budget actions during the Trump administration introduced major proposals for reducing federal Medicaid funding and restructuring how the benefit operates. The “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which became law in 2025, is expected to reduce federal Medicaid spending by more than $1 trillion over the next 10 years. The law also implements policies such as work requirements and additional cost-sharing, which could reduce coverage for some recipients and result in states taking on a larger share of expenses.
