The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is set to resume its improvement project on 55th Street, spanning from Plainfield Road in Countryside to Interstate 294 (Tri-State Tollway) in Western Springs. This stretch passes through La Grange and Lyons Township. The work will recommence on Monday, June 2.

To facilitate the completion of this project, traffic on 55th Street will be reduced from two lanes to one lane in each direction between Plainfield and Wolf roads. Despite the construction, access to residences and businesses within the work zone will remain open. The $9.5 million initiative aims to resurface 1.6 miles of roadway, modernize traffic signals, construct new ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps, and extend the existing multi-use path on the north side of 55th Street from Brainard Avenue to Wolf Road. The project is expected to conclude by the end of the year.

Commuters should anticipate delays and are advised to allow extra travel time when passing through this area. Alternative routes are recommended for those looking to avoid congestion. Drivers are urged to heed flaggers and signs within work zones, adhere strictly to posted speed limits, and remain vigilant for workers and equipment.

As part of Rebuild Illinois, IDOT plans over the next six years to enhance more than 3,200 miles of highway and nearly 9 million square feet of bridge deck. This initiative represents a $33.2 billion investment across all transportation modes. Achievements up until Year Five include approximately $16 billion worth of improvements statewide affecting 6,541 miles of highway, 686 bridges, and implementing an additional 986 safety enhancements.
