The Village of Western Springs announced on Apr. 29 that the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has resumed work on the 55th Street Improvement Project. The contractor is reinstalling a modified work zone to complete remaining tasks on the north side of 55th Street as soon as possible, with lane closures and traffic adjustments expected.

The project includes a westbound single right lane closure from Plainfield to Laurel Avenue. Between Laurel and Wolf Road, one lane will be open in each direction on the south side of 55th Street while storm sewer, curb, and gutter work are completed. After this phase, a single westbound lane closure will remain for further work on the north side. IDOT expects these activities to finish by mid-summer, after which patching and resurfacing will occur before landscaping begins in the fall.

Western Springs operates under a council-manager form of government designed to separate policy-making from administration, with professional staff supporting advisory boards according to the official website. The village manager oversees personnel and implements policies set by elected officials who serve as volunteers according to the official website.

Resident volunteers play an important role by serving on boards and commissions that address community issues and provide expert recommendations according to the official website. Village offices are located at 740 Hillgrove Avenue according to the official website.

This information about construction progress has also been posted on IDOT’s dedicated page for the project. As Western Springs continues operating as a local government entity under its council-manager system according to the official website, ongoing infrastructure improvements reflect collaboration between residents, staff, and state agencies.
