President Preckwinkle, First District Commissioner Tara Stamps, and Maywood Mayor Nathaniel Booker recently inspected homes in Maywood that were repaired by Cook County employees and other volunteers. The initiative, in collaboration with Rebuilding Together Metro Chicago, aims to assist elderly, disabled, and low-income residents. This marks the 34th year of the County’s participation.
Volunteers from County departments including Capital Planning and Policy, Facilities Management, and Transportation and Highways carried out safety repairs such as installing grab bars, smoke detectors, and handrails. Other work included painting, leak fixing, and replacing cabinets and light fixtures.
“I am proud to support efforts like this to give back to our community and help our senior residents thrive in their homes,” said Commissioner Stamps while touring a renovated home.
Maywood Mayor Nathaniel Booker remarked, “This collaboration represents an amazing experience: people plus partnership equals possibilities.” He emphasized the importance of initiatives like Village Pride, Village Wide Day in revitalizing the community with the help of nearly 200 volunteers.
Wanda Ramirez, Executive Director of Rebuilding Together Metro Chicago, expressed appreciation for Cook County’s involvement. “We truly appreciate the continuing participation of Cook County employees who selflessly donate their time, talent and skills for the benefit of others during our National Rebuilding Day efforts each year,” she said.
Cook County contributed $100,000 through its Community Development Block Grant and additional resources from the Department of Transportation and Highways. Trade union members also assisted in the work.
