Jesús “Chuy” García, a U.S. Congressman representing Illinois’ 4th district, has been vocal on several issues through his recent tweets. García, who succeeded Luis Gutiérrez in 2019 and has a history of public service in Illinois, addressed topics ranging from women’s rights to constitutional knowledge and legislative actions.
On January 22, 2025, García reflected on the historical significance of Roe v. Wade by stating “52 years ago, Roe v. Wade became the law of the land, affirming women’s right to their bodies and futures.” He criticized Republicans for removing this federal right in 2022 but expressed commitment that Democrats will continue efforts to restore it.
Later that day, he commented on Pam Bondi’s stance regarding birthright citizenship as Attorney General nominee by President Trump. García questioned her qualifications with “Pam Bondi, Trump’s pick for Attorney General, said she’ll ‘study’ birthright citizenship. How can someone be qualified for Attorney General and not even know the 14th Amendment of the Constitution?”
On January 23, 2025, García shared his position on legislative matters with a statement about his vote against the Laken Riley Act. He posted “My statement after voting against final passage of the Laken Riley Act https://t.co/FWzTYgdiC8“, indicating his opposition to this particular piece of legislation.
