The Town of Cicero recently held an event to commemorate Presidents Day, Lithuanian Independence Day, and Casimir Pulaski Day. This gathering included community leaders, students, and residents who came together to celebrate history and heritage.
Dr. Anthony Grazzini served as the master of ceremonies for the event. He stated, “This is one of our monthly engagements highlighting the culture of our community,” emphasizing that it was a “triple celebration” recognizing all three commemorated days.
Guest speakers at the event included former assessor and town historian John Kociolko and distinguished guest Alvida Baukus. Students from Morton High School participated by delivering speeches about the historical significance of these days.
Chaplain Ishmael Vargas opened the ceremony with an invocation centered on unity and cultural appreciation. He remarked, “Thank God for this day as we come together as a community to celebrate diversity and culture.”
The Lithuanian American Community Cicero Chapter expressed their gratitude for the town’s support. Baukus noted, “Lithuanian traditions have been woven into Cicero’s rich history for over a century,” adding that they were celebrating a shared American heritage.
A significant portion of the event was dedicated to educating attendees about Lithuanian history. This included exploring symbolism in both Lithuanian and American flags and recounting the tale of the Iron Wolf, which signifies Vilnius’s founding.
Students from Morton East High School shared insights on each commemorated day. Senior Ashley Mandujano discussed Presidents Day, saying, “Leadership isn’t just about holding a title—it’s about making a difference.” Alexa Moreno reflected on Casimir Pulaski’s contributions to American independence: “Pulaski Day is a celebration of community, culture, and the values that unite us.” Junior Mia Moreno highlighted Lithuanian Independence Day’s importance: “This day commemorates Lithuania’s independence, its rich heritage, and the resilience of its people.”
Town historian John Kociolko concluded with remarks on Casimir Pulaski’s legacy as the “Father of the U.S. Cavalry.” He connected Pulaski’s historical impact with U.S. presidents: “Washington gave Pulaski his command; Lincoln relied on cavalry in the Civil War; Theodore Roosevelt led the Rough Riders—three of four Mount Rushmore presidents had ties to cavalry.”
The event ended with appreciation for participants’ involvement in celebrating Cicero’s diverse history. Kociolko said, “We are incredibly proud of our students and community members for participating in this celebration,” emphasizing that such events highlight what makes Cicero vibrant.
