Jesús “Chuy” García, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Illinois’ 4th district, has been vocal in his criticism of current administration policies, expressing his views through a series of tweets. García, who succeeded Luis Gutiérrez in 2019, has a long public service record, having been a member of the Illinois Senate and the Cook County Board of Commissioners prior to his congressional role.
On April 8, García highlighted concerns regarding the administration’s treatment of immigrants during a bicameral spotlight hearing. He stated, “During this week’s bicameral spotlight hearing, I called out the shameful and unlawful treatment of immigrants by this administration. Never in our history has a president weaponized the law to this extent for his own personal benefit.”
A subsequent post on April 9 focused on the importance of trust between immigrant communities and local law enforcement. García tweeted, “The truth is that welcoming policies increase trust between the community and local law enforcement. When immigrant communities don’t trust their local law enforcement, public safety suffers. Sadly for Republicans, this isn’t about law and order – it’s about dishonesty.”
On April 10, García criticized the passage of the SAVE Act by House Republicans, describing it as a “voter suppression bill.” He posted, “House Republicans just passed the SAVE Act, a voter suppression bill that would disenfranchise military voters, married women, voters of color, low-income voters, and millions of other eligible Americans all while costing billions in taxpayer dollars.”
