The Illinois Department of Transportation announced on April 29 that Stage 2 construction for the 47th Street and East Avenue Intersection Project has begun, resulting in new traffic lane restrictions. Although the department said restrictions would start on April 30, they were put in place the morning of April 29.

This project is significant for local residents as it aims to improve safety and traffic flow at a major intersection. The changes are part of an $18 million plan to reconstruct the existing four-way stop sign into a signal-controlled intersection with dedicated turn lanes, improved lighting, and sidewalk ramps that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad crossing just west of the intersection will also be upgraded.

During construction, two-way traffic will remain open on both streets. Westbound traffic on 47th Street is now limited to one lane between Plainfield Road and Bluff Avenue. There is a left turn-only lane at Eberly/East Avenue for vehicles turning south onto East Avenue; eastbound traffic east of Eberly Avenue faces no restrictions. Southbound drivers on East/Eberly Avenue have one lane from north of Gerritsen Avenue to 49th Street, while northbound drivers are restricted to one lane from 49th Street to Sahler Avenue.

Brookfield’s Village Hall at 8820 Brookfield Avenue serves as the main administrative center where residents can access municipal offices and services such as permits and utilities according to the official website.
