Village of Western Springs Board of Fire and Police Commissioners met June 22.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

Present: Chair Marcia Buell; Commissioner Janet Dahl; Brian Budds, Chief of Police; Casey Biernacki, Deputy Village Manager

Agenda Items:

1. Call to Order

Chair Buell called the meeting to order at 3:10 p.m.

2. Roll Call

Chair Marcia Buell and Commissioner Janet Dahl were present. Also present were Brian Budds, Chief of Police, and Casey Biernacki, Deputy Village Manager.

3. Public Comment

None.

4. Notice of Sergeant Retirement

Chief Budds explained that Sergeant Jage retired after 24 years of service. His last day was June 18, 2022.

5. Recess to Closed Session 5 ILCS 120/2(c)(1) - Discussion of the Appointment, Employment, Compensation, Discipline, Performance, or Dismissal of Specific Employee(s) of the Public Body

MOTION: Commissioner Dahl made a motion to adjourn to closed session. Chair Buell seconded the motion. The motion passed by a unanimous voice vote and the Commission adjourned to closed session at 3:11 p.m.

6. Reconvene to Open Session

Open session reconvened at 3:17 p.m.

7. Motion to Approve the Promotion of Candidate from Current Eligibility List to the Classified Rank of Sergeant to Fill Current Sergeant Vacancy

MOTION: Commissioner Dahl made a motion to approve the promotion of Sara Magnuson from the current eligibility list to the rank of Sergeant. Chair Buell seconded the motion. The motion passed by a unanimous voice vote.

8. Other Business

Chief Budds says that the lateral application process is currently open until July 5. We have at least one applicant as of this date. He says he is going to start background checks on applicants early in order to expedite the process. We need to do an initial list and then a final list, which we anticipate being done in July.

The process for hiring a new deputy chief is ongoing. Four internal applicants applied. Interviews will be in the upcoming week and one in July to accommodate a candidate who is on vacation.

9. Adjournment

MOTION: Commissioner Dahl made a motion to adjourn the meeting and Chair Buell seconded the motion. The motion passed by a unanimous voice vote. The meeting adjourned at 3:26 p.m.
