Village of Western Springs Recreation Commission met March 3

Village of Western Springs Recreation Commission met March 3.

Here are the minutes provided by the commission:

1. CALL TO ORDER: E. Piotrowski called the meeting to order at 5:34 p.m.

2. ROLL CALL: Commissioners present: Erin Piotrowski, Matt Pinkham, Martin Healy and Winifred Lyday. Absent: Kevin Collins. Also present: Recreation Program Manager, Rita Ligeikis, Recreation Supervisor, Mike Kenny, Director of Recreation, Aleks Briedis

3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The Commission reviewed the minutes from the June 7, 2021 meeting. M. Pinkham motion and W. Lyday seconded that the minutes from the June meeting be approved as written. Roll call was taken and the motion passed unanimously.

4. CITIZENS COMMENTS: None.

5. OLD BUSINESS: None.

6. NEW BUSINESS: None.

7. REPORTS:

a) DIRECTOR BRIEDIS: Director Briedis gave an overview of the department for the benefit of the newer commission members. He reviewed staffing, facilities and tenants, program areas, budget, recent accomplishments and future projects.

b) PROGRAM MANAGER LIGEIKIS: R. Ligeikis reviewed her job responsibilities with the Commission to help familiarize them with her role within the department. She also stated that she is currently working on organizing classes for the summer brochure, recruiting staff for camps and Safety Village, offering an Easter coloring contest and looking for a new contractor for children’s Tumbling, Sewing and Yoga classes. She reported that the Early Childhood classes both Session 1 & 2 have been full with some waitlists but running very smoothly. Other programs running are Chess, Double the Fun, CSI Stem and Lego classes.

c) SUPERVISOR KENNY: M. Kenny oversees all athletic programs for youth and adults, in house programs (basketball, lacrosse, softball), camps, pickleball, adult leagues, travel leagues (basketball, lacrosse), and contracted programs (Sports R Us, Spartz Sportz, Soccer in America).

Rec Basketball season ends March 12th and it was a very successful season. There were 244 participants from grades 1st-8th. Travel basketball just concluded as well with another very successful season. 191 kids participating from grades 3rd -8th for the boys and grades 4th – 8th for the girls.

8. TRUSTEE AND BOARD REPORT: Trustee Chen not in attendance. See https://wsprings.com/AgendaCenter for specific minutes. The next Village board meetings are as follows: March 14 & 28.

9. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS: None.

10. OTHER: None.

11. NEXT MEETING: The next Recreation Commission meeting will be held on July 7, 2022.

12. ADJOURNMENT: W. Lyday motioned and M. Pinkham seconded the motion to adjourn the meeting. Roll call was taken and the motion passed unanimously. The meeting adjourned at 6:58 pm.
