When it comes to the Community Consolidated School District 146 school board's needs, Julie Berry's vision is clear.

"The most pressing issue is the impact of the [COVID-19] pandemic," Berry told Patch.com. "I will continue to work towards a state of normalcy with staff and student safety at the forefront."

Berry is running as part of the 146Forward slate along with Rick Lloyd, Jill Dunlap and Patty Chlada.

She said the group differs from its rivals in that they are committed to transparency and collaboration when it comes to working toward what's best for the community.

"The pandemic has presented many challenges that we all continue to work hard to overcome," Berry said. "I think in-person learning is most effective for students. I support the guidance from the Illinois State Board of Education, which includes the current mask requirement by IDPH."

A former grade school teacher now serving on as secretary on the Community Consolidated School District 146 Board, Berry said her work on that board proves she's up for the challenge.

"I am incredibly proud of District 146's outstanding progress over the past six years," she said, "In 2017, I voted in favor of the ambitious initiative of full-day play-based kindergarten designed to nurture the developmental learning stages of young children I have demonstrated good governance with the ability to make tough decisions, and I have voted with conviction."

Berry said voters can trust her because she stands for transparency and communication.

"In addition, I have the courage, fortitude, and desire to make a difference," she said.

The 50-year-old Berry resides in Tinley Park with her husband and four children.

The election is April 6.
