Proviso Township High School District 209 students suspended, expelled 955 times in a single school year

Proviso Township High School District 209 reported seven expulsions and 948 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

The district transferred five students to another program instead of suspending or expelling them.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 955 students during the year. That equates to 21.6 percent of the 4,428 students enrolled.

Students were expelled for seven incidents with unspecified reasons.

Of the 689 in-school suspensions, 457 were given to boys and 232 were given to girls, all of whom were high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 682 incidents. There were two incidents of violence that caused physical injury. For 600 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 259 out-of-school suspensions, 173 were given to boys and 86 were given to girls, all of whom were high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 220 incidents. There were 28 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 78 incidents, students were suspended for 1-3 days.
