Berwyn FD responds to 138 fires in 2017

Berwyn Fire Department responded to 885 calls in 2017 - 10.1 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Berwyn included 138 fires - 64 structure fires, 23 vehicle fires and 51 other fires. The fire department also responded to seven calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $1,573,920 in fire loss - or about $11,405 per fire.

The department also received 740 false calls, including 22 malicious calls and 718 other false calls.

The calls resulted in four civilian fire-related injuries and one civilian fire-related death. Additionally, one fire service member was injured in fire-related incidents and three were injured in non fire-related incidents.

The Berwyn Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 80 active employees and 78 retired or inactive employees, was $1,042,648 in debt as of December 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $9,654 for every fire in 2016.
