Under the leadership of head coach Nelson Ameer and assistants Matt Hickey and John Gattone, the fifth-grade boys basketball team at St. Luke Parish School in River Forest recently completed the season in first place.

Finishing undefeated in two leagues, the  Bearcats ended with a 12-0 streak in the Classic League and a 9-0 record in the Lyons League, winning the championship.

The Lyons League comprises a mix of public and private schools, while the Classic League consists of all Catholic schools. Coach Ameer noted that while the Lyons League lacks playoffs, rendering the Bearcats top team by the numbers, the Classic League saw the Bearcats manage a 3-0 playoff record.

“All the boys should be very proud of these accomplishments and how hard they worked to get them,” Ameer said. “It was a total team effort and everyone contributed to our success.”

Players are Ninos Ameer, Brian Timpone, Luke Hickey, Jack Paris, Dutch Navigato, Brian Riggs, Luca Gattone, Jimmy Maloney, Danny Goodwin, Max Lopez, Johnathan Svete and Anthony Scudiero.

“I can't wait to see what the next three years will look like,” Ameer said.

St. Luke’s offers a strong athletics program at its 519 Ashland Avenue location, with an athletic committee focused on developing physical strength, teamwork and positive self-image among its students.
