The Proviso Township High Schools District 209 Board honored 20 Proviso East High School students, as well as the girls’ basketball team, for their achievements during a recent meeting.

The board praised 19 of the students for their performance in the 2016 ACT Prep Program and "Strive for Five Campaign." As part of the program, the students either had perfect attendance in the ACT Prep Program, improved greatly on practice exam scores or showed significant improvement in various academic subjects.

Jessenia Arredondo and Kewan Clemons were singled out for showing "GRIT" (Guts, Resolve, Intellect and Talent) for recent achievements despite personal adversity.

"I’m happy to report their achievement," Proviso East Principal Patrick Hardy said. "Thank you (students) for your dedication and your willingness to stick with the program."

The girls' basketball team was recognized for winning the Oswego East Holiday Tournament, the West Suburban Conference's Gold division title with a perfect 12-0 conference record and a 27-4 overall record.

There were also multiple all-conference honors, acceptance of four players into the 2015-2016 West Suburban Conference girls’ basketball all-conference team, three players to the WSC girls’ basketball all-academic team, and one girl nominated for a spot on the McDonald’s All-American High School Basketball Team.

"We can’t be more proud of them," Theresa Kelly, president of the District 209 Board, said.
