The River Forest Public Works Department recently posted a list of frequently asked questions about the village's new curbside composting program on the Village of River Forest website.

The program began in August and offers residents the opportunity to redirect some of their food waste away from the landfill, while also receiving a vital natural fertilizer for their yards and gardens.

River Forest officials said food waste makes up a large part of the organic waste that goes into U.S. landfills. When the material breaks down in landfill conditions, usually without oxygen, it creates methane, which contributes significantly to global warming. By participating in the new program, residents can help the environment and also receive an annual return of finished compost from the program each spring.

The program costs $18 per month for a one-year contract and includes the finished compost and weekly pickup service. Residents can sign up on the Village of River Forest's website: https://vrf.us.
